OSRS flipping guide
Buying below what people are paying and selling above what people are accepting. How the Grand Exchange works, what decides whether a trade profits, and how to judge an item before you commit to it.
Flipping is the only way to make GP in Old School RuneScape that has no level requirements at all. A fresh account and a maxed one use exactly the same technique; the only difference is how much capital each has to put to work.
The mechanic is simple. The Grand Exchange matches offers automatically, so at any moment there is a price people are paying to buy immediately and a lower price people are accepting to sell immediately. You place a buy offer near the lower price, wait, then sell near the higher one. What is left after the game takes its 2% is your profit.
The difficulty is entirely in item selection. A wide spread on something nobody trades is worthless; a narrow spread on something trading millions of units a day is real money you can collect repeatedly. Three mechanics decide which is which:
- Sale tax takes 2% of every sale above 50 GP, which means a spread has to clear roughly 2.04% before it makes anything at all.
- Buy limits cap how many units you can purchase in any four-hour window, putting a hard ceiling on what one item can earn per cycle.
- Volume decides whether your offers fill at all. It is the number beginners ignore and the one that matters most.
Start with flipping for beginners if you have not placed a trade before, or how to pick items to flip if you know the mechanics and want the selection method.

Common questions about flipping
- Is flipping worth it in OSRS?
- It depends on your capital. Flipping scales with the size of your bank rather than your levels, so a small bank produces small returns. Above a few million GP it becomes a reasonable passive supplement to other income, and above roughly 50M it can outperform most skilling methods for the time invested.
- How much money do you need to start flipping in OSRS?
- There is no minimum. With a few hundred thousand GP you can trade high-volume, low-price items like runes and ammunition. What changes with a larger bank is which items your capital fits, not whether the technique works.
- Can free-to-play players flip in OSRS?
- Yes. The Grand Exchange works identically for free accounts, though you have three offer slots instead of eight and a much smaller set of tradeable items. Flipping is one of the few money-making methods where free players are not at a structural disadvantage.
- Is flipping against the rules in OSRS?
- No. Buying low and selling high on the Grand Exchange is normal use of an in-game system. Using external tools to view public market data is also permitted. What is not permitted is real-world trading, buying gold, or using automation to place offers for you.
