Choosing what to train
The most useful early principle is to train skills that unlock things rather than skills that raise a number. A level that opens content is worth more than a level that only makes you faster at something you could already do.
That usually means quest requirements first, because quests give more experience per hour than almost any training method in the early game. Training a skill to 30 the slow way when a quest would have given you the same levels in twenty minutes is the most common mistake new accounts make.
After that, the skills that pay while you train them — Thieving, Farming, Slayer, Hunter — do double duty, which matters considerably when GP is the constraint.
