About Smithing
Smithing converts mined ore into bars, then bars into weapons and armour. Most of what you can smith is worth less than the bars it consumes, so the skill is usually trained at a loss.
The exceptions matter: cannonballs and the Blast Furnace both let you train Smithing while breaking even or profiting.
Fastest training
Rates assume an attentive player with the gear and unlocks that make each method work. Real sessions include banking, breaks and mistakes.
Blast Furnace
Gold bars with the goldsmith gauntlets give the fastest Smithing experience in the game. It needs a busy world and steady clicking.
Giant dwarf anvil, gold bars
Slower but simpler than the Blast Furnace, and it can be done solo.
Cannonballs
Very slow experience but genuinely profitable and extremely AFK. Many players smith cannonballs while doing something else.

- Cannonballs are the classic profitable Smithing method. Blast Furnace gold is close to break-even.
- AFK
- Cannonballs are one of the most AFK activities in the game.
- Free-to-play
- Smelt iron and steel bars, then smith them into items to sell. Free players can use the Falador furnace and anvil.
Useful quests
Quest experience is often worth far more than the time it takes, particularly at low levels where the curve is shallowest.
- Doric's QuestBring a dwarf some ore. A large early Mining experience reward for very little work.
- The Knight's SwordForge a replacement sword. Gives enough Smithing experience to skip levels 1 to 29 entirely.12,725 xp
- Dragon Slayer IIThe quest that unlocks Vorkath. A major milestone for any account building toward consistent PvM income.25,000 xp
