About this quest
Hetty in Rimmington is brewing something and needs four ingredients. It is one of the shortest quests in the game and one of the few worth doing purely for the experience reward relative to time spent.
Three of the four ingredients are trivial. The fourth — the rat's tail — has a catch that catches almost everyone once, and it is worth knowing before you start rather than after.
Why do it: 325 Magic experience for about five minutes of work, which at low level is worth more than an hour of casting. It is also a quest point with no requirements attached.

01Start the quest first
This order matters more here than in most quests, because one of the drops does not exist until Hetty has asked for it.

Talk to Hetty in her house in the south-east corner of Rimmington. She lists the four things she needs.

Do not collect anything before this conversation.
Rats only drop the tail once the quest is started. Killing rats beforehand gets you nothing and is the single most common way to waste time on this quest.
02The four ingredients

Rat's tail: kill a rat. There are several right around Rimmington, including in the building west of Hetty's house.

Burnt meat: cook a piece of meat until it burns. The house directly north of Hetty's has a range, and burning at low Cooking is not difficult.

Eye of newt: buy one from the magic shop in Port Sarim for a few coins. It is a short walk east.

Onion: pick one from the field north-west of Rimmington, or from behind Fred the Farmer's house near Lumbridge.

Bring all four to Hetty. She adds them to her cauldron and tells you to drink from it.

Drink from the cauldron. The quest does not complete until you do — handing over the ingredients is not the last step.
People hand in the items, see nothing happen, and walk away. Drink from the cauldron.
What to do next
The Magic experience is the reason to do this early rather than later; 325 experience is roughly level 5 from a standing start.
You are in Rimmington, which is a short walk from Port Sarim and the Draynor area, so Vampyre Slayer and the other Misthalin starters are convenient next steps.
