About this quest

Fred the Farmer wants twenty balls of wool and will not shear his own sheep. The quest is a single loop — shear, spin, deliver — and it exists mostly as a Crafting tutorial with a quest point attached.

It is the most tedious of the starter quests, because twenty balls means twenty shears and twenty spins with a walk between. Nothing can go wrong; it simply takes a few more minutes than the others.

Why do it: 150 Crafting experience takes a level 1 account to level 5 outright, and the quest point counts toward the 32 needed for the Champions' Guild and Dragon Slayer I.

What makes this quicker

  • Bring shears and take twenty balls of wool in one go. The spinning wheel is upstairs in Lumbridge Castle, so the loop is short if you arrive with everything.

Walkthrough

01Shearing

Sheep respawn quickly, so the field holds enough for a full run without waiting. Shears spawn nearby if you do not own a pair.

  1. 1

Speak to Fred the Farmer, in the farmhouse north-west of Lumbridge, and take the job.

  2. 2

Get a pair of shears. There is usually a set on the table in Fred's house, so you do not need to buy one.

    • Shears
  3. 3

Shear the sheep in the field west of the house until you have twenty wool. Sheared sheep turn pink and regrow their wool after a short wait.

    • Wool

You need twenty balls of wool, which means twenty pieces of raw wool. Counting as you go saves a second trip to the field.

02Spinning and delivering

  1. 1

Take the wool to the spinning wheel on the first floor of Lumbridge Castle and spin all of it into balls.

    • Ball of wool
  2. 2

Return the twenty balls to Fred to finish.

What to do next

The Crafting levels are the point. Level 5 from a standing start removes the slowest stretch of the skill, and Crafting 8 — two levels further — is a requirement for Dragon Slayer I.

If you are collecting early quest points, Cook's Assistant and The Restless Ghost are both a short walk away and neither takes longer than this one.
