About this quest
King Bolren's village has been raided by Khazard troops and three orbs of protection have been taken. The quest is a short fetch-and-fight with one boss at the end, wrapped inside a hedge maze that is more confusing than anything else in it.
The reward is what makes it worth doing: the spirit tree network, which is one of the better travel systems in the game and is used constantly afterwards for Gnome Stronghold access.
Why do it: Spirit tree travel, 11,450 Attack experience, and it is a requirement for Monkey Madness I — which is itself the gateway to a great deal of later content.
Walkthrough
01Into the maze
The maze is the part people remember, and it is worse than it looks the first time because the hedges all look identical. Elkoy walks you out afterwards, so you only have to solve it once.
- 1
Find the Tree Gnome Maze south-east of East Ardougne and work your way to the centre. There is no trick to it — follow the openings and keep heading inward.
- 2
Talk to King Bolren at the middle. Three orbs have been taken by Khazard troops and he wants them back.
- 3
Agree to help. Elkoy escorts you out of the maze, which saves you solving it a second time.
Take the escort. Walking out yourself is several minutes you do not need to spend.
02The battlefield
North of the maze is an open battlefield with a war going on across it. Nothing here is aggressive enough to be dangerous, but you are running back and forth over open ground several times.
- 1
Find Commander Montai — he is the one in red — and give him six logs. Bring them with you; there is nothing convenient to chop out here.
- 2
Talk to him again. Three of his trackers went out for firing coordinates and none of them came back, and finding them is the next job.
- 3
The first tracker is at the large building in the north-west, the second is locked in a cell in the north-east, and the third is wandering loose outside the south-west corner.
- 4
The first two hand over their numbers outright. The third has lost his mind and answers in riddles about hands and feet — he is counting, and the number he means is small.
If you guess the third number wrong the shot misses and you simply fire again. It costs nothing but the walk back.
- 5
Take the coordinates to the ballista in the south-west corner of the battlefield — not the catapult beside Montai — and fire it.
03The three orbs
- 1
Speak to Montai again, then head north to the stronghold and climb the crumbled wall.
- 2
A level 48 Khazard commander attacks as you land. He has very few hitpoints and can be safespotted, but a low-level account should still arrive with food.
There is a stall past the wall where you can be attacked without being able to eat. Do not linger there at low level.
- 3
Take the ladder up in the western room, deal with the second commander or walk past him, and take the orb of protection from the chest.
- 4
Return the orbs to King Bolren at the centre of the maze to finish. Elkoy will take you back in.
What to do next
The spirit tree network is the practical reward. It connects the Gnome Stronghold, the Grand Exchange and several other points, and it is how most players reach the Stronghold for the rest of the account's life.
This quest is a requirement for Monkey Madness I, which in turn gates a large amount of later content. If you intend to get there eventually, doing The Grand Tree next is the natural continuation.
