Common questions
- How is max hit calculated in OSRS?
- Effective strength is your Strength level multiplied by your prayer bonus and rounded down, plus a style bonus and a flat 8. The max hit is then that effective level multiplied by your equipment strength bonus plus 64, divided by 640, plus 0.5, and rounded down. Every step rounds down, which is why one extra level sometimes changes nothing.
- Does Magic level affect max hit?
- No. In magic the spell sets the damage — fire surge maxes at 24 whether you are level 95 or level 99. What raises it is magic damage bonus from equipment, applied as a percentage on top. Magic level governs accuracy and which spells you can cast, not the size of the hit.
- Does the slayer helmet stack with a salve amulet?
- No. They apply to the same damage step and the game uses one, not both. On an undead slayer task the salve amulet (e) is the stronger of the two, which is why this calculator asks you to choose one rather than ticking both.
- Why does my max hit not go up when I gain a level?
- Because the formula rounds down at several points. A level gain can be absorbed entirely by the rounding, and then two levels later the hit jumps by one. This is normal and is why max hit rises in steps rather than smoothly.
- What strength bonus should I enter?
- The total shown in the equipment stats tab in game, under Melee Strength for melee or Ranged Strength for ranged. It is the sum of every worn item, so read it from the tab rather than adding items up by hand.
Training the levels behind these numbers is covered in our skill guides.
How max hit is calculated
Melee and ranged share a formula. Your level is multiplied by your prayer bonus, the attack style adds a flat amount, and the result is combined with your equipment strength bonus:
effective = floor(level x prayer) + style bonus + 8
max hit = floor(0.5 + effective x (strength bonus + 64) / 640)The rounding is the part that matters and the part hand calculations get wrong. Every step floors, and flooring early means a level can be swallowed entirely — which is why max hit climbs in steps rather than smoothly, and why a +1 sometimes appears to do nothing.
Magic works differently
Magic does not use your level at all. The spell sets the damage and equipment adds a percentage on top:
max hit = floor(spell damage x (1 + magic damage bonus))A fire surge maxes at 24 at level 95 and at level 99 alike. Magic level decides accuracy and which spells you can cast; magic damage bonus decides how hard they land.
This is also why there is no prayer option on the magic tab. Augury and the mystic prayers raise magic accuracy and defence, not damage, so none of them change the number.
What the inputs mean
- Strength bonus. Read it from the equipment stats tab in game rather than adding items up. It is the total across everything worn.
- Attack style. Aggressive adds three effective levels, controlled adds one. It is a flat addition, so it matters proportionally more at low levels.
- Level boost. What a potion adds to your level, not the potion’s percentage. A super strength at 99 adds 19.
- Damage multiplier. A slayer helmet and a salve amulet occupy the same step and do not stack — pick whichever applies.
What this does not tell you
Max hit is a ceiling, not an average. You will roll everything between zero and it, so a higher max hit raises your damage over time but says nothing about any individual attack. Accuracy — whether the hit lands at all — is a separate calculation driven by your attack level and attack bonus against the target’s defence.
For working out how long something will take to kill, max hit is only half the picture. It is the half that is fixed and knowable, which is why it is worth getting exactly right.
Worth knowing
Special attacks have their own multipliers and are not included here.
Some weapons and set effects change damage in ways specific to them. This covers the standard formula and the common multipliers rather than every edge case.
Accuracy is a separate calculation. A larger max hit that misses more often is not always an upgrade.
