About this quest

The druids at Taverley want to purify their stone circle and need four pieces of meat enchanted in the Cauldron of Thunder. The quest itself is short, with no combat that cannot be avoided.

It exists as a gate rather than as a story. Herblore does not function at all until this is complete — you cannot clean a herb, mix a potion, or gain a single experience point in the skill. Every Herblore guide begins here whether it says so or not.

Why do it: It is the only way to unlock Herblore, and Herblore underpins the potions that make almost all mid and late-game combat viable.

What makes this quicker

This is the only thing standing between you and Herblore, and it is short. Do it before buying a single herb.

Walkthrough

01Starting at the stone circle

Speak to Kaqemeex at the stone circle north of Taverley. He sends you to Sanfew.

Find Sanfew upstairs in the herb shop in Taverley — the octagonal building marked with a herb symbol.

02The four meats

Raw rat meat, raw bear meat, raw beef and raw chicken. All four are cheap on the Grand Exchange, and buying them turns an hour of hunting into a two-minute purchase.

Enter Taverley Dungeon by the ladder south of Taverley and head north past the skeletons.
The dungeon holds monsters well above the level of anyone doing this quest. Run the route rather than fighting — nothing down there needs killing.

Find the gate to the east flanked by two animated suits of armour, and go through to the Cauldron of Thunder.

Use each piece of meat on the cauldron. They turn blue when it has worked — check all four before leaving.

03Finishing

Take the enchanted meats back to Sanfew in Taverley.

Speak to Kaqemeex again at the stone circle. He teaches you the basics and Herblore unlocks.

What to do next

Herblore now works. The first thing worth doing is cleaning grimy herbs, which trains the skill and makes money at the same time — one of very few activities that does both from level 3.

The skill's real value arrives later: prayer potions, super combat potions and antifires are what make higher-level bossing survivable, and none of them exist for an account that skipped this quest.
