01The battered book

1. 1

   Search the bookcase on the east wall of the house south-west of Seers' Village bank for a battered book, and read it to start the quest.

2. 2

   Use a knife or any slash weapon on the book to cut it open and find the key. A knife spawns in the house north of the church.

02Restarting the workshop

Two machines have to be working before the furnace will do anything. Both are easy to get subtly wrong.

1. 1

   In the northern chamber, turn the east water control first and then the west one so both show green, then pull the lever by the water wheel.

   The order matters. If you turned the west one first, turn it back and start again with the east.

2. 2

   Repair the bellows in the eastern chamber with leather, a needle and thread. Spares are in a crate in the north-west of the central room and a stacked crate in the western room.

   Mine elemental ore with your pickaxe. An earth elemental at level 35 guards the area.

03Making the shield

1. 1

   Use the elemental ore, plus four coal, on the furnace to get an elemental metal.

   Use the ore on the furnace, not the coal. If nothing happens, the water wheel or the bellows are not actually running.

2. 2

   With the slashed book in your inventory, use the metal on the central workbench and a hammer to make the elemental shield. If the option does not appear, destroy the book and take a fresh one from the bookcase.
