The short version
- Herbiboar needs 80 Hunter and Bone Voyage, and 31 Herblore before it pays anything at all.
- It is a tracking puzzle, not a trap method — you are clicking constantly and it is not AFK.
- The payout scales with your Herblore level, so the same activity is worth more the longer you have played.
- It trains Hunter while it earns, which almost nothing else at this level does.
Herbiboar is unusual enough that it is worth explaining what it actually is before anything else, because the name suggests hunting and the activity is nothing of the sort. You are not setting traps and you are not fighting. You are following a trail of disturbed scenery around Fossil Island, reading where it points, and searching the right thing next. Get to the end and a herbiboar appears, you harvest it for herbs, and you start again.
That single fact decides whether you will like it. Herbiboar pays well and carries no risk whatsoever, but it asks for your attention the entire time.
What you need before you can start

31

Bone Voyage

Access to Fossil Island
The Hunter requirement is the real gate and it is a long way up. Nothing about herbiboar is available early, and there is no reduced version at 70 or 75 — you either have 80 Hunter or you are doing something else.
The Herblore requirement is softer but matters more than people expect. Harvesting a herbiboar below 31 Herblore is close to pointless, and the value of what you get keeps climbing well past that. Two accounts running identical trails can see meaningfully different GP per hour purely because one has higher Herblore.
How a trail works
The loop is the same every time:
- Find the active start
Fossil Island has several tunnel entrances. One of them is the live one, and finding it is the first part of every cycle.
- Follow the trail
Each stop tells you where to go next. You search the scenery it points at, which reveals the following stop, and so on down the chain.
- Flush it out
The trail ends at a tunnel. Searching it makes the herbiboar appear.
- Harvest and repeat
Harvesting gives grimy herbs and Hunter experience. Then the next trail starts somewhere else and you do it again.
The trail objects and the order they resolve in are fixed game data rather than something we have written, and the OSRS Wiki's herbiboar page maps every one of them properly. We link to it rather than reproducing it — a half-copied trail table is worse than no trail table, and theirs is correct.
What is worth saying, and what the tables do not tell you, is that almost nobody memorises the routes. Most people run this with a plugin that marks the next object, and the difference in rate between someone who has and someone who has not is large. If you are considering herbiboar seriously, set that up first — see our RuneLite plugins guide.
What it pays, and why the numbers disagree
Estimates for herbiboar vary more than for almost any other method, and the reason is not that someone is wrong. The output is herbs, herb prices move, and which herbs you get depends on your Herblore level. A rate quoted by a maxed account in a good market and a rate quoted by a fresh 80 Hunter at 40 Herblore are describing genuinely different activities.
Our own estimate sits on the herbiboar method page alongside the current figures, and like every rate on this site it is a range rather than a promise.
The part that does not vary is the shape of the income. There is no gear to lose, nothing can kill you, and there is no bad session — you cannot get spiked by a dry streak the way you can at a boss. For some players that predictability is worth more than a higher headline number somewhere riskier.
These are the herbs that carry a session. At low Herblore you see very little of them; at high Herblore they are most of what you bank, which is the whole reason the rate moves so much between accounts.
It is also worth being clear about what you are actually paid in. Herbiboar produces grimy herbs, and grimy herbs are not GP until somebody buys them. The high-value ones move perfectly well, but a long session produces a lot of a small number of item types, and dumping them all at once moves the price against you. Selling across a few sessions rather than in one block is the difference between the rate you calculated and the rate you got — the same lesson that applies to any high-volume gathering method.
Mistakes that cost more than they look
The two most expensive errors here are not mechanical.
The first is starting without the Herblore level. Because the Hunter requirement is the visible gate, people hit 80 Hunter and begin immediately, then conclude herbiboar is overrated. What they are measuring is herbiboar at low Herblore, which is a genuinely poor method pretending to be this one. If your Herblore is low, the honest sequence is to fix that first.
The second is treating it as background activity. Herbiboar tolerates inattention badly: a missed search is not a small loss of efficiency, it is a stalled trail. Players who run it while watching something else report rates far below the estimates and are usually right about their own numbers. The method is not underperforming — it is being run at half attention, and it does not work at half attention.
Should you actually do this?
Herbiboar wins
Levels and herbs
You were training Hunter anyway, or you want herbs for your own Herblore rather than GP. On an ironman that second case is decisive — this is one of the cleanest ways to supply a Herblore grind, and no amount of GP per hour elsewhere substitutes for the herbs themselves.
Something else wins
GP per hour
You want the most GP for the time, or you want to earn while doing something else. Herbiboar is neither the fastest earner available to an account with 80 Hunter nor remotely AFK, and choosing it for those reasons is choosing it for the two things it is worst at.
The ironman case deserves its own sentence because it changes the answer completely. A main can buy herbs; the only question is whether gathering them beats buying them, and often it does not. An ironman cannot, so the comparison is not against a GP rate at all — it is against every other way of getting ranarrs and snapdragons into the bank, and herbiboar beats most of them while training a skill at the same time.
Where it fits in a Hunter account
Herbiboar arrives at 80, which for most accounts is late in the skill. Below it, chinchompas are the faster experience and birdhouses are the passive income; herbiboar is the point at which Hunter stops being a skill you pay to train and starts being one that pays you. Our Hunter skill guide covers what sits either side of it.
If the goal is 99 Hunter rather than GP, herbiboar is not the fastest route and never has been — see fastest skills to 99 for what the fast route actually costs. If the goal is a bank while getting there, it is a reasonable place to spend the last twenty levels.
Common questions
- What level do you need for herbiboar in OSRS?
- 80 Hunter to track it at all, and Bone Voyage completed to reach Fossil Island. You also want 31 Herblore, because that is the level at which harvesting starts returning herbs rather than nothing useful.
- Is herbiboar AFK?
- No. Herbiboar is one of the least AFK money makers at its rate. Every trail is a sequence of searches you have to read and follow, and standing still does nothing. If you want Hunter income you can walk away from, birdhouse runs are the method you are looking for.
- Is herbiboar worth it in OSRS?
- It is worth it if you were going to train Hunter anyway, if you want herbs for your own Herblore rather than GP, or if you specifically want a method with no combat and no risk. It is not worth grinding 80 Hunter purely for the GP rate — several methods pay comparably for far less investment.
- Does Herblore level affect herbiboar?
- Yes, and it is the main reason two players report very different rates for the same activity. Higher Herblore shifts the herbs you receive toward the more valuable end of the table, so the same number of trails is worth progressively more as you level.
