The short version
- Grand Exchange trading needs no levels at all and is usually the answer for a non-combat account.
- Herb runs are the best value in the game per minute actually played, from Farming 32.
- Thieving is one of very few skills where the training is itself the money maker.
- The strongest routine layers something passive, something active, and capital working in offers.
A large number of players do not enjoy combat, and a smaller number are building accounts that deliberately avoid it. Neither group has to be poor. Several of the best earners in Old School RuneScape involve no fighting at all, and the very best of them scales further than any boss.
This is a complete picture of what is available, ordered by what it asks of your account.
Requires nothing at all
Grand Exchange trading
The only money-making method in the game with no level requirements whatsoever. You buy below what people are paying and sell above what people are accepting, and the difference minus the 2% tax is yours.
It is also the only method that keeps earning while you are logged out, and the only one whose ceiling is your bank rather than your stats. For a non-combat account this is usually the answer, and everything else on this page is a way to fund it.
Start with flipping for beginners if you have not traded before, or low budget flipping if you have under a million.
High Level Alchemy
Needs Magic 55 and nothing else. Converts items into coins at a rate the game fixes, so whenever an item trades below its alch value plus a nature rune, casting the spell profits.
The margins are small per cast but it trains Magic at the same time, which makes it one of very few activities that pays you to level. Our high alchemy calculator ranks every item by profit per cast at current prices.
Requires modest levels
Herb runs
Farming 32 and a few hundred thousand GP for seeds. Plant across every patch you have unlocked, log out, come back roughly eighty minutes later.
Measured against real time the rate looks unremarkable. Measured against time actually at the keyboard it is among the best things in the game — a full run is ten minutes and it runs twice a day indefinitely. See herb runs.
Thieving
Profitable at almost every level, and one of very few skills where the training is the money maker.
- Ardougne knights at Thieving 55 drop coins directly — no banking, no selling, no exposure to price movement.
- Vyrewatch Sentinels at 82 after Sins of the Father.
- Elves at 85 after Mourning's End Part II, the highest-paying Thieving in the game.
Mining and gathering
- Amethyst at Mining 92 is close to genuinely AFK and pays steadily.
- Anglerfish at Fishing 82 is the most AFK profitable fishing available.
- Redwood logs at Woodcutting 90 need a click every thirty seconds.
None of these are spectacular per hour. All of them run while you do something else, which is the point.
Processing: buying, converting, selling
Processing methods buy a raw material, apply a skill, and sell the result. They need capital rather than combat, and the margin is set by the market rather than by your level.
| Method | Requirement | Roughly pays |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning grimy herbs | Herblore3 | 200k–500k/hr |
| Tanning dragonhide | None | 300k–600k/hr |
| Potion decanting | None | 300k–800k/hr |
| Plank making | Magic86 | 500k–1M/hr |
The important habit with all of these is checking the current spread before each batch. Margins move week to week and several of these methods flip negative regularly. The GE profit calculator settles it in a few seconds.
Free-to-play without combat
Free accounts have fewer options but the same structure:
- Iron ore from Mining 15 — available almost immediately
- Gold ore from Mining 40 — worth more per unit
- Yew logs from Woodcutting 60 — the long-standing staple
- Air runes from Runecraft 1 after Rune Mysteries
- Cooking fish — a genuine processing loop for free players
- Flipping — works identically, with three offer slots instead of eight
Our free-to-play money making page covers these in full.
Building a non-combat routine
The accounts that do well without combat almost always layer three things rather than grinding one:
- Something passive — herb runs, tree runs, birdhouses, all on timers
- Something active — Thieving, mining, or a processing loop
- Capital working — Grand Exchange offers filled before every session
The passive layer costs ten minutes and runs for hours. The capital layer costs a few minutes and runs while you are offline. Only the active layer needs your attention, which means your effective rate is considerably higher than any single method's number suggests.
You can filter the full method list by attention level and requirements on our money-making page — set Type to non-combat to see only what applies here.
Rates and requirements, side by side
| Method | Needs | Roughly pays | Attention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cleaning grimy herbs | Herblore3 | 200k–500k/hr | Constant clicking |
| Tanning dragonhide | Nothing | 300k–600k/hr | Constant clicking |
| Potion decanting | Nothing | 300k–800k/hr | Constant |
| Plank making | Magic86 | 500k–1M/hr | Constant |
| Herb runs | Farming 32+ | Best per minute played | Ten minutes, twice a day |
| Birdhouse runs | Hunter 5+ | Modest, fully passive | Five minutes, hourly |
| Fishing anglerfish | Fishing82 | 300k–500k/hr | Low |
| Cutting yews | Woodcutting60 | 150k–250k/hr | Very low |
The column that matters most is the last one. Processing methods pay well per hour but demand every minute of it; run-based methods pay less per hour of game time and far more per minute you actually spend.
The processing pattern, and why it pays
Almost every non-combat money maker above the low end is the same trade: buy something, change its state, sell it for more.
- Find the pair
Grimy herb and clean herb. Dragonhide and leather. Three-dose and four-dose potions. The margin is the price gap between the two states.
- Check the gap covers the tax
You pay 2% on the sale. A gap that looks like 8% is nearer 6% once the Grand Exchange has taken its share.
- Check you can buy enough
Buy limits cap how much raw material you can acquire per four hours. A method that pays 800k an hour but only lets you buy two hours of material is a 400k an hour method.
- Watch for the gap closing
These margins move as more people notice them. Re-check before a long session rather than assuming last week's numbers.
Building a no-combat income
The strongest non-combat setup is not one method but a stack of them:
- Farming runs on a timer, because they pay whether or not you play
- Birdhouses alongside, on their own timer
- One processing method for the active part of a session
- Grand Exchange offers running underneath all of it
None of these need a single combat level, and together they comfortably out-earn most mid-level combat methods per hour of real time — which is the measure that matters if you are not playing all evening.
What you give up
Being honest about the ceiling: without combat you are locked out of the highest rates in the game. Vorkath, raids and the better Slayer tasks pay several times what any of the above do per hour.
What you get in return is that none of it can go wrong. There is no death, no supply cost, and no learning curve — the rates above are the rates a first-time player gets, not the rates an expert gets.
Common questions
- Can you make money in OSRS without combat?
- Yes. Grand Exchange flipping requires no levels at all, and skilling methods like herb runs, amethyst mining and Thieving pay well with no fighting. Several non-combat methods out-earn low-level combat comfortably.
- What is the best non-combat money maker in OSRS?
- For accounts with capital, Grand Exchange trading, because it scales with money rather than levels. For accounts with levels but no capital, herb runs and elf or vyre pickpocketing are the strongest, at roughly 800,000 to 1.5M an hour.
- Can free-to-play players make money without combat?
- Yes. Mining iron and gold ore, cutting yew logs, crafting air runes and flipping on the Grand Exchange are all available to free players and none of them require fighting anything.
