About this quest

The Burthorpe garrison cannot retake Death Plateau because the only path up is held by trolls. Your job is to find another way, which turns into a chain of short conversations around the town.

There is no combat and very little travel. The quest is best understood as the entry point to the Troll series, and as the source of climbing boots — a cheap permanent item that appears in a surprising number of later requirements.

Why do it: It opens the Troll quest line, including Troll Stronghold and eventually the route to God Wars, and the climbing boots it unlocks are needed for several later journeys.

Walkthrough

01Finding another way up

Talk to Denulth in the tent south-east of the Warriors' Guild in Burthorpe.

Talk to Eohric on the top floor of Burthorpe Castle. He points you at Harold, the guard who knows the combination, drinking in the Toad and Chicken.

Head north-west up the path towards the plateau and find Saba in his cave. He knows of a secret path starting from a Sherpa's house.

02Boots

The secret path needs footwear that grips. This is the part of the quest people remember, because the boots stay useful long afterwards.

Talk to Dunstan by the anvil in north-east Burthorpe.

Take the certificate Denulth gives you back to Dunstan, along with your climbing boots and an iron bar, to get spiked boots.

What to do next

Climbing boots are cheap and are required to reach several places later, including parts of the Troll series. Keep a pair rather than selling them.

Troll Stronghold is the direct continuation and is worth doing while the area is fresh. Further down that line sits access to the God Wars Dungeon, which is one of the better mid-game money makers.
