Not required, but expected: combat level 50 or above. You can start below that and will find the fights harder.

About this quest

Dragon Slayer I is the quest that has gated rune platebody since 2001, and for free-to-play accounts it remains the single most important thing to complete.

It involves three separate preparation tasks before you can even reach the island, then a solo fight against a level 83 dragon. It is genuinely difficult for a new account and genuinely satisfying to finish.

Why do it: Rune platebody is the best free-to-play body slot armour, and the combat experience is a substantial boost at the level most players attempt this.

What makes this quicker

  • Buy the three map pieces from other players or take the shortcut routes, and buy an anti-dragon shield rather than doing the Duke's errand for one.
  • Bank before you sail to Crandor. The trip is effectively one-way and anything you forget is a full round trip to replace.
  • Take more food than you think you need for Elvarg. A failed attempt costs the whole journey again, not just the fight.
  • Melzar's Maze is the part most people underestimate. Go in with the keys' order in front of you rather than exploring it.

Walkthrough

01Before you go anywhere

Dragon Slayer is three errands and a boss fight, and almost everyone who struggles with it struggles because they started before they were ready. The shopping list is longer than any other free-to-play quest.

  1. 1

Get to 32 quest points. This is the real gate — the Champions' Guild will not let you through the door without them, and they can come from any quests you like.

  2. 2

Buy or make the door items: a wizard's mind bomb, a piece of silk, a lobster pot and an unfired bowl. The bowl is why the quest lists Crafting 8 — you make it from soft clay.

    • Wizard's mind bomb
    • Silk
    • Lobster pot
    • Unfired bowl
  3. 3

Get an anti-dragon shield. You cannot survive Elvarg's breath without one, and there is no substitute in free-to-play.

    • Anti-dragon shield

Do not set off for Crandor without this equipped. It is the whole fight.

  4. 4

Bring three planks and a stack of steel nails for the ship. Ninety nails is the usual recommendation, because nails are regularly lost when you hammer them in — bring more than the job needs.

    • Plank
    • Steel nails
    • Hammer
  5. 5

Bring 10,000 coins if you would rather buy the third map piece than fight for it. The alternative needs Magic 33 and Telekinetic Grab, which is what the mind bomb is really for.

02Starting the quest

  1. 1

Speak to the Guildmaster in the Champions' Guild, south-west of Varrock. He sets the task and hands over the key to Melzar's Maze.

  2. 2

Speak to Oziach in his hut in Edgeville. He is the one who will make the rune platebody, and he wants proof you are a real dragon slayer before he does.

  3. 3

Return to the Guildmaster, who lays out the three things you need: the map to Crandor in three pieces, a ship to get there, and protection from dragonfire.

03Map piece one — Melzar's Maze

North-west of Rimmington, south of the Crafting Guild. The maze is a chain of coloured keys: each door needs the key from a specific monster in the room before it, so the route is fixed even though the maze looks open.

  1. 1

Work the key chain in order. Each key comes from one particular creature — the rat with the long tail, the hooded ghost without a cape, the skeleton carrying the small round shield — rather than from any monster in the room. Killing the wrong one wastes time, not the run.

Follow an in-game route for the exact creatures. The maze is the one part of this quest where a written description is genuinely worse than watching someone do it.

  2. 2

Melzar the Mad drops the magenta key. Past his door is a lesser demon, level 82, guarding the green key.

  3. 3

Safespot the demon if your combat is low. Pull it into the corridor and stand one square east of the magenta door — it cannot reach you there, and Ranged or water spells will finish it.

  4. 4

Use the green key on the green door, then open and search the chest for the map piece.

04Map piece two — the Oracle and the Dwarven Mine

  1. 1

Talk to the Oracle on top of Ice Mountain, west of Edgeville. She gives you the clue for the sealed door below.

  2. 2

Go down into the Dwarven Mine and find the magic door. Use each of the four items on it in the order the Oracle described.

    • Wizard's mind bomb
    • Silk
    • Lobster pot
    • Unfired bowl

Get the order wrong and the door resets — you start the sequence again. Read the Oracle's clue properly before you begin.

  3. 3

Search the chest inside for the second piece.

05Map piece three — Wormbrain

Wormbrain is a goblin locked in the Port Sarim jail, third cell along, and he is holding the last piece. There are two ways to get it and they suit very different accounts.

  1. 1

The simple way: talk to him through the bars and pay 10,000 coins.

  2. 2

The cheap way: kill him with Ranged or Magic through the bars, then Telekinetic Grab the piece off the cell floor. That needs Magic 33 — drink the wizard's mind bomb if you are a level or two short.

    • Wizard's mind bomb
  3. 3

Use one map piece on another to combine all three into the map to Crandor.

06The ship

  1. 1

Find Klarense on the docks at Port Sarim — the second dock from the south — and buy the Lady Lumbridge from him for 2,000 coins.

  2. 2

Board the ship and look at the hole in the bow. Use planks on it three times, hammering nails in each time, until it is fully repaired.

    • Plank
    • Steel nails
    • Hammer
  3. 3

Go to Draynor Village and find Ned, north of the bank. Ask him to captain the ship — he agrees, and he is the only one who will.

07Crandor and Elvarg

The ship runs aground on Crandor. From here it is a fight, and the difference between a comfortable kill and a lost bank is preparation rather than levels.

  1. 1

Before you go down to the lair, open the secret passage on Karamja's side — the wall just south of Elvarg's arena. It becomes a shortcut back, which is what you will want if the fight goes badly.

Do this first. If you die without it open, getting back to your gravestone takes far longer than the timer is comfortable with.

  2. 2

Equip the anti-dragon shield before entering the arena. Elvarg is level 83 and her dragonfire is the thing that kills people, not her melee.

    • Anti-dragon shield
  3. 3

Fight her in melee range if your Defence is 35 or above. It sounds wrong, but standing back invites the breath attack, which hurts far more than her melee does. Stand underneath her while you eat — she takes a moment to reposition.

  4. 4

Use Protect from Magic if you have Prayer 37. Her fire blast is a magic attack and it lands often. Note that each dragonfire hit also drains a tenth of your remaining prayer.

  5. 5

Killing Elvarg finishes the quest. Oziach will now make you the rune platebody you came for.

What to do next

Talk to Oziach and buy the rune platebody. It is the best free-to-play body slot armour and the entire point of the quest.

Crandor is now reachable, and the secret passage you opened on the Karamja side makes it a short trip. The island is a reasonable place to mine and to fight lesser demons.

For a free-to-play account this is the ceiling of the quest list, so the next step is usually combat levels and money. For members, Dragon Slayer II is a long way off but this is its first requirement.
