The short version
- Prayer 43 beats any equipment purchase at the start. Protection prayers change survivability more than gear does.
- Weapon before armour, almost always — damage shortens the fight, which reduces incoming damage too.
- Several of the best upgrades are free: fire cape, salve amulet, void, quest rewards.
- An upgrade pays for itself only if you spend real hours at the content it improves.
The mistake almost everyone makes with gear is buying the most expensive thing they can afford. The better question is which upgrade changes your kill speed or survivability the most per GP — and the answer changes sharply as your bank grows.
A useful rule throughout: an upgrade pays for itself only if you spend real hours at the content it improves. A 100M weapon that saves 10% of your kill time is excellent if you boss daily and a waste if you do not.
Before you buy any gear
Two things beat every equipment purchase at this stage.
Prayer 43 unlocks the protection prayers. Nothing you can buy changes survivability as much. Our Prayer calculator prices the route at current bone prices.
Quest unlocks. Lost City for dragon weapons, Monkey Madness I for the dragon scimitar, Animal Magnetism for Ava's device. All are free and all matter more than a marginal armour upgrade.
Stage one: your first proper setup
Roughly 1–5M
This buys a setup that handles Barrows, Slayer tasks and the entry-level bosses comfortably.
- Melee weapon — Abyssal whip at Attack 70. The defining mid-game weapon for two decades, and cheap for what it does.
- Boots — Dragon boots. Excellent strength bonus for the price.
- Body and legs — Barrows armour, or Void for Ranged
- Ranged — a magic shortbow or rune crossbow with Ava's device
- Amulet — Amulet of glory, later a fury
The whip is the single biggest jump here. Everything else is incremental.
Stage two: making bosses comfortable
Roughly 5–30M
This is where you stop dying to mechanics you understand.
- Fire cape — free, from the Fight Caves, and best-in-slot for melee for a long time
- Occult necklace — a large magic damage increase, essential for Zulrah
- Trident of the seas — the standard magic weapon for mid-game PvM
- Salve amulet (ei) — enormous against undead, and free from a quest
- Berserker ring or an archer ring
- Full void if you are ranging seriously
The salve amulet is worth calling out because it is free and, at the content where it applies, better than items costing tens of millions.
Stage three: efficiency upgrades
Roughly 30–150M
Nothing here unlocks new content. All of it makes existing content faster.
- Toxic blowpipe — the single biggest Ranged DPS upgrade available at this level
- Dragon warhammer or Bandos godsword — defence reduction for team bosses
- Bandos chestplate and tassets — the standard strength-focused body and legs
- Primordial boots — from Cerberus crystals
- Amulet of torture / anguish
Judge each of these by hours spent at the relevant content. If you kill Vorkath for two hours a week, a blowpipe pays back slowly. If you do it daily, it pays back fast.
Stage four: end-game
150M+
- Scythe of Vitur, Twisted bow, Tumeken's shadow — raid weapons, situational and enormously expensive
- Torva, Masori, Ancestral — top-tier armour by style
- Avernic defender, Ferocious gloves
The Twisted bow deserves a specific warning. It is exceptional against high-magic targets and mediocre elsewhere, and it costs more than most accounts' entire bank. Buying one before you have content to use it at is a common and expensive mistake.
How to think about upgrades
Weapon before armour, almost always. Damage compounds — it shortens every fight and reduces the damage you take by ending the fight sooner. Armour only reduces incoming damage.
Free upgrades first. Fire cape, salve amulet, void, quest rewards. Several of these beat items costing tens of millions and cost only time.
Check the price before assuming. Gear prices move constantly, and items fall sharply after a new tier is released. Check the current price of anything on this page before budgeting for it.
Do not buy for content you are not doing. The most common wasted purchase is high-tier gear bought before the account has anything to use it on.
Funding it
Gear progression is really bank progression. How to make 10M covers the first meaningful step, and flipping or PvM covers which route suits your account.
Worth knowing: capital sitting in your bank waiting for an upgrade earns nothing, while the same capital in Grand Exchange offers works while you play. Several accounts fund their gear entirely from the returns on the money they were saving anyway.
Buy in this order
Upgrades are not equal. These are ranked by improvement per gp rather than by how impressive they are.
- Whatever stops you dying
Antifire protection, a decent shield, food you are not rationing. Survival upgrades raise your real rate more than damage upgrades, because deaths cost whole trips.
- Your weapon
Damage decides kill speed everywhere, and kill speed decides income. The weapon is almost always the highest-value slot to upgrade.
- Barrows gloves
One unlock, every combat style, best-in-slot for a very long time.
- Prayer bonus and utility
Longer trips rather than faster kills. Worth it once trips are ending on prayer rather than on food.
- Marginal defensive pieces
Real improvements, small ones. These are where money goes once the above are done, not before.
What a slot is actually worth
High value per gp
Buy first
Weapon, gloves, and anything preventing a specific death — antifire, antivenom, the right shield.
Each changes what content is viable rather than making current content slightly better.
Low value per gp
Buy last
Incremental defensive pieces, cosmetic-adjacent upgrades, best-in-slot variants of things you already have a good version of.
Rent before you buy
Before committing to an expensive setup, do the content with borrowed or cheap equivalents and see whether the bottleneck is really gear. Frequently it is not: if trips are ending because of mistakes rather than because kills are slow, gear will not fix it and the money is better spent later.
The check: would this upgrade have saved the last trip that went wrong? If the answer is no, it is not the next purchase.
Common questions
- What gear should I buy first in OSRS?
- Prayer 43 for protection prayers comes before any gear purchase. After that, an abyssal whip, dragon boots and a Barrows or void body set cover almost all mid-level content for a few million GP.
- What is the best cheap gear in OSRS?
- Dragon boots, an abyssal whip, a fire cape and Barrows armour give most of the practical benefit of far more expensive setups. Void is an excellent budget option for Ranged in particular.
- Do I need expensive gear to boss in OSRS?
- No. Most solo bosses including Vorkath and Zulrah are comfortable in mid-tier gear. Expensive upgrades increase kill speed rather than unlocking content, so they pay for themselves only if you spend serious hours at the content.
