About this quest
Ava is a scientist in Draynor Manor with a magnetism problem and a shortage of undead chickens. The quest is a scattered errand across Misthalin and Morytania with a small logic puzzle at the end.
Almost nobody does it for the story. Ava's device is the reward, and it is effectively mandatory for any account that intends to use Ranged seriously — it collects a percentage of the ammunition you fire, which turns Ranged from an expensive style into an affordable one.
Why do it: Ava's device. Every Ranged account in the game has one, because firing without ammunition recovery roughly doubles the cost of training and of every ranged fight afterwards.
Walkthrough
01Finding Ava

Ava is in the west wing of Draynor Manor on the ground floor. Search the bookcase to open the secret door to her room.
The bookcase is the entrance. Walking the manor looking for a door will not find her.

She asks for two undead chickens.
02The undead chickens
The farm is west of the Ectofuntus in Morytania, which needs Priest in Peril completed to reach.

Bring a ghostspeak amulet and some ecto-tokens, and talk to Alice at the undead farm.

Go back and forth between Alice and Malcolm in the cow pen until she sends you to the Old Crone for an amulet.

After the cutscene, Malcolm will sell you two undead chickens for ecto-tokens.
03The research notes

Ava gives you research notes to translate — a row of buttons to set correctly.

Leave the second, fifth and ninth buttons from the left green, and turn every other one red.

Return the translation to Ava. She builds the device.
What to do next
Upgrade the device as your Ranged level rises. Ava's accumulator and then the assembler each recover more ammunition, and the assembler in particular is a large improvement.
With ammunition recovery solved, Ranged becomes a viable primary combat style, which changes what content is accessible — a great many bosses are far easier ranged than meleed.
