Not required, but expected: combat level 40 or above. You can start below that and will find the fights harder.
About this quest
King Roald has not heard from Drezel at the temple east of Varrock, and sends you to check. What starts as a welfare visit turns into the quest that opens an entire region of the game.
Morytania is completely inaccessible without this. Not harder to reach — closed. Canifis, the Ectofuntus, Barrows, Slayer towers, the Myreque line and everything downstream sits behind this one quest, which makes it one of the highest-value things a mid-level account can do.
The quest itself is moderate. One avoidable fight, a key puzzle, and a fetch task at the end that takes longer than the rest of it combined.
Why do it: It is the gate on all of Morytania. Barrows, the Slayer tower, the Ectofuntus and the entire Myreque quest chain are unreachable until it is done.
What makes this quicker
- This is the gate to Morytania and to most of Slayer. Doing it early makes a dozen later quests possible, so it is rarely worth delaying.
- Take food for the dog. It is the one part of the quest that can actually kill a low-level account.
Walkthrough
01Getting to the temple
- 1
Talk to King Roald in Varrock Palace. He has not heard from Drezel, a priest at the temple to the east.
- 2
Travel to the temple of Paterdomus, east of Varrock, through the gate north-east of the eastern exit.
02The temple dog
- 1
Go down into the dungeon north of the temple and deal with the level 30 guardian.
- 2
Step one square east after climbing down and attack it with Ranged. It cannot reach you there, which makes the fight free.
- 3
Tell Drezel it is dealt with.
03Keys, water and the coffin
- 1
Go back through the trapdoor and use the golden key on the gate, then continue to the monument room.
- 2
Search the monuments to find the iron key, and fill a bucket from the well with murky water.
- Bucket
- 3
Unlock Drezel's cell with the iron key, then ask him to bless the water.
- 4
Use the blessed water on the coffin on the Morytania side to trap the vampyre and free Drezel.
04The essence
The last step is a straightforward delivery and the longest part of the quest by some distance.
- 1
Drezel wants 50 unnoted rune essence.
- Rune essence
Unnoted only. Fifty essence is fifty inventory spaces, so this is at minimum two full trips — plan for it rather than being caught out at the end.
What to do next
Morytania is open. The immediate draw for most accounts is Barrows, which is a reliable money maker from around 70 Attack and Defence and needs no further quests.
The Slayer tower north of Canifis holds several profitable task types, and the Ectofuntus is the cheapest Prayer training in the game if you have the patience for it.
This quest is also a requirement for the entire Myreque chain, which eventually leads to Darkmeyer and the blisterwood weapons.
