About this quest
The Culinaromancer has frozen the Lumbridge court mid-meal and the only way to free them is to cook a dish for each person. It is not one quest but ten: an introduction, eight independent subquests, and a finale.
That structure is the whole character of it. The subquests can be done in any order and each has its own requirements scattered across the game, which means Recipe for Disaster is less a quest than a long-running project that an account chips away at over months.
The gloves are the reason anyone does it. Each subquest completed raises the tier of gloves you can buy, so progress is useful long before the finale — but the finale itself needs 175 quest points, which is usually the real wall.
Why do it: Barrows gloves, which are best-in-slot for almost every account and for every combat style at once. Very few single unlocks improve melee, ranged and magic simultaneously.
What makes this quicker
- Each subquest is independent. Do them one at a time between other things rather than trying to clear the whole thing in one sitting.
- Barrows gloves are the reward and they are the best-in-slot melee gloves for most accounts for a very long time. That is the reason to finish it.
Walkthrough
01How this quest is shaped
Recipe for Disaster is not one quest. It is an introduction, eight independent subquests, and a boss fight, and treating it as a single sitting is the main reason people bounce off it. Each subquest has its own requirements and its own item list, and they can be done in any order and months apart.
- 1
Start with Another Cook's Quest. It needs Cook's Assistant done and very little else, and it opens the Culinaromancer's chest — which is worth having on its own as a bank in Lumbridge cellar.
- Eye of newt
- 2
Treat the eight subquests as a checklist to work through over time, not a list to clear in an evening. Each one frees a council member and each one is gated separately.
- 3
Do them in whatever order your account allows. There is no required sequence and nothing is lost by skipping one and coming back.
02The eight subquests
Roughly in ascending order of what they ask for. The skill and quest gates are the hard part; the subquests themselves are mostly short.
- 1
Freeing the Mountain Dwarf — the gentlest of them, and a reasonable second step after the introduction.
- 2
Freeing the Goblin generals — short, and needs Goblin Diplomacy behind it.
- 3
Freeing the Lumbridge Guide — needs the Biohazard line, so it arrives once you have done some Ardougne questing.
- 4
Freeing Evil Dave — needs Shadow of the Storm, and is the one people remember for the stew colours.
The spice combinations are fiddly and easy to get wrong. Read the step before you start mixing rather than after.
- 5
Freeing Pirate Pete — needs Cabin Fever, and involves a trip underwater with its own equipment.
- 6
Freeing Skrach Uglogwee — needs Big Chompy Bird Hunting, which is why that quest is worth having out of the way.
- 7
Freeing Sir Amik Varze — needs Family Crest, and is one of the two that gates most accounts.
- 8
Freeing King Awowogei — needs Monkey Madness I and high Agility and Cooking. This is usually the last one standing.
If you are checking whether you can finish Recipe for Disaster, check this subquest first. It is the wall.
03The Culinaromancer
The finale is a gauntlet rather than a single fight: the bosses of the earlier quests in sequence, then the Culinaromancer himself. It is the only part that needs preparation as a boss trip.
- 1
Go in with a full inventory of food and the best gear you own. There is no bank between the fights.
You fight several bosses back to back. Budget supplies for the whole gauntlet, not for the first one.
- 2
The Culinaromancer's chest sits right beside the fight, which means gear you buy there is available immediately afterwards.
- 3
Finish and buy Barrows gloves. They are the best melee gloves most accounts will wear for a very long time, and they are the reason to have done any of this.
What to do next
Buy the Barrows gloves from the Culinaromancer's chest. They are best-in-slot in the hands for the overwhelming majority of accounts and stay that way for a very long time.
The chest itself is worth knowing about: it is a bank-adjacent shop in the Lumbridge cellar selling food and combat supplies, and it is convenient for anything starting from Lumbridge.
With 175 quest points already banked, the quest cape is closer than it looks. The remaining quests are mostly long rather than difficult at this point.
