Old School RuneScape free-to-play

What a free account can actually do — the money-making methods available to you, the quests worth doing, and the skills that gate the rest.

Routes

What a free account can earn

Every money-making method available without membership, ranked by the conservative end of its estimate — because for several of these the upper figure is what a large bank earns rather than what a new account will.

Quests worth doing first

Two free-to-play quests gate money-making methods outright. The rest are worth doing for the experience rewards and quest points.

Training

Skills that pay for themselves

What a free account can train, and what each is worth doing for.

All skills

Attack

Train on chickens and cows to start, then move to the Stronghold of Security or Al Kharid warriors. Free players cap at 99 like everyone else.

Strength

Hill giants in the Edgeville dungeon give reasonable experience and drop big bones for Prayer.

Defence

Train alongside Attack and Strength on the same targets; there is no separate free-to-play Defence method worth isolating.

Hitpoints

Trains automatically from any free-to-play combat.

Ranged

Train with iron or steel arrows on the same targets used for melee. An oak or willow shortbow carries you a long way.

Magic

Air strike through fire bolt on chickens and cows, then splash or alch from 55. Free players have access to High Level Alchemy.

Prayer

Bury big bones from hill giants. Free players have no altar access, so the rates are slow.

Mining

Iron ore at the Al Kharid or Varrock mines, then coal. Free players can bank iron for a modest income.

Fishing

Shrimp and anchovies to start, then trout and salmon at Barbarian Village or Lumbridge. Lobsters at Karamja are the free-to-play staple.

Woodcutting

Normal logs to 30, then willows at Draynor and yews at Varrock or Falador for GP.

Runecraft

Air, mind, water, earth, fire and body runes are all available. Air runes at the Falador altar are the free-to-play staple.

Smithing

Smelt iron and steel bars, then smith them into items to sell. Free players can use the Falador furnace and anvil.

Crafting

Leather crafting, gold jewellery and gem cutting are all available. Free players commonly craft gold amulets.

Cooking

Cook lobsters and swordfish from Karamja. Free players commonly buy raw fish and cook it for a small profit.

Firemaking

Burn logs you cut yourself. There is no free-to-play Wintertodt equivalent.

Trading

The free-to-play market

Flipping is the one money-making method where a free account is not at a structural disadvantage.

The Grand Exchange works identically for free accounts. The same 2% sale tax, the same buy limits, the same four offer slots. What changes is the item list, which is much smaller — so volume matters more than it does for members, and the realistic candidates are ores, logs, runes, food and armour rather than anything exotic.

Flipping also has no level requirement at all, which makes it the only method on this page whose speed depends on the gp you already have rather than on what you have trained.

Questions

Common questions

Can you buy membership with GP in OSRS?
Yes. An Old School bond is a tradeable item, so a free-to-play account can buy one on the Grand Exchange with gold earned in free-to-play and redeem it for 14 days of membership. No real money is involved on your side — somebody else paid for the bond originally and sold it for gp.
What is the fastest way to afford membership as a free player?
It depends on what you can already do. Grand Exchange flipping needs no levels at all but scales with the gp you already have, while gathering methods like iron ore mining or yew logs need levels but no starting capital. The table on this page ranks every free-to-play method by how long it takes to reach the current bond price.
Is flipping possible in free-to-play?
Yes, and it is the one money-making method where a free account is not at a structural disadvantage. The Grand Exchange works identically, the 2% sale tax is the same, and buy limits are the same. The free-to-play item list is much smaller, so volume matters more than it does for members.
How many quests can free-to-play players do in OSRS?
Free accounts can complete a small set of quests, and two of them matter for money making: Rune Mysteries unlocks air rune crafting, and The Corsair Curse unlocks ogress warriors. The rest are worth doing for the quest points and experience rewards.
